ARTISTS STATEMENT
Lindy Shuttleworth PotteryClay is sensual to the touch and provides me with an immediate, very direct and almost primal connection to nature's fundamentals. It fuels my need and desire to create functional, yet spirited, shapes using my hands as the instruments of art. My artistic interpretation using nature's gift of clay has been influenced by the designs of the Aboriginal, African, Native American, Japanese and Caribbean societies that I have learned about through travel and study. With carving or the application of glaze, I frequently seek to interpret the graceful and imaginative designs that are basic to these ritualistic cultures. Currently, I am following my fascination for the ancient tradition of Japanese raku, yet utilizing my own modern approach.
